 News Update - 12/21/2024

The flag area at Down Memory Lane park has been completed.   I wanted to share with Goldfield residents and alumni some of the improvements that have been done at the park.   The area around the flag was cleared and a large cement pad was poured.   Hennigar Construction did the cement work.   It was completed mid summer of this year.   GrassMasters Landscaping  ( TJ Stumpf ) did the landscaping work around the cement. This was a much needed project as the boulders,  flag pole and bench on the area were beginning to sink into the ground.   There was an old building there years ago which many of you may remember.   The ground had  started to cave.  Filler was added to stop the sinking and then the new pad and landscaping were completed.   We also purchased a new sign highlighting the Community Improvement awards the Bayview Club won back in the '90s.  Paul Sorensen is making a new frame for the sign.  Next spring we will be planting red, white and blue flowers in two new flower boxes donated by Paul Sorensen in memory of his Mom, Arlis Sorensen.   John Sorensen donated money for the flowers, rock, dirt etc that will be used to fill the boxes.  We will be planting 7 rose bushes around the flag area.  The bushes are being donated in memory of the following people:  Ernie Lewis and Denny Stephens by the Class of '66; Larry Stewart,  former girl's basketball coach by Dana Halvorson and Greg Schipull; Jim Johnson by Sonna Johnson; Alice Ruiter by Paul Sorensen; Kay Meinke, former school teacher by Nikki and Dean Rick and Edward Smith by Sandy Smith.   Other park improvements have included bird houses,  a butterfly garden  with butterfly and bee houses, 8 new trees ( 2 are evergreens donated in memory of Katy Whyte and her son Loy ), additional rock for the pathway,  lots of mulch and a new flower garden.   The flower garden has 4 peony bushes donated by the Class of '66 in memory of Carol Helmke and Diane Cunningham Nelson.   There is also a rose bush donated by Sandy Smith in memory of Sandy Powell.  Along the center entrance there are two peony bushes donated in memory of Doug and Millie Nelson.   A yellow maple tree just west of the flag area is donated in memory of Sandy Schipull.    A bench sits just off the pathway near the parking lot entrance.  It was donated in memory of Sandy and Duane Schipull by their daughter Dana Halvorson and has cranberry bushes behind it that were donated by Jim and Dave Harvey.   This spring there will be a Strawberry Vanilla Hydrangea tree planted in memory of Pam and Ernie Lewis  donated by Matt and Mark Lenning and Sue Girard.    I would like to give a special thanks to Gold Eagle Coop and Land O'Lakes who partnered to donate $8,000 to the new flag area  as well as First Bank in Goldfield who donated $500.   Also thanks to the Wright County Charitable Foundation for a $1,000 grant.   All of these improvements are possible because of the support that has been received from individual donations, business donations,  memorial donations,  alumi donations,  supper fund raisers,  grants,  park workdays and of course thousands of cans!!  Thanks to everyone who has helped  support the Down Memory Lane park project.   There are so many to thank and I can't list them all but know each one is greatly appreciated!!  We look forward to continuing improvements to the park!  If you are in the area stop by and check out the park!

Greg Schipull

 News Update - 8/5/2021

Mark your calendars! The next GHS Alumni reunion is scheduled for Saturday June 25, 2022. Part of the 2017 committee (Sonna Axon Johnson, Dennis Knight, Sandra Sheets, and Alan McCollough) have met the last couple of weeks and started making some plans. If you would like to join us and be part of the committee, let me know, we would love to have you.

The City of Goldfield, which now owns the Goldfield school building, is currently working on some plans with developers for part or all of the school building. With that in the works, we have decided to hold our reunion at the new Red Shed Event Center in Clarion IA. It is a very nice, air-conditioned facility, which will make it so much more comfortable to stick around and visit with your classmates and friends. I know the committee won’t miss having to bring in and set up all the tables, chairs, fans, sound system, etc. If it works, we do plan to have the school open for a little while, so you can see what is taking place.

We hope that you will make plans to come back and join us for a fun weekend. I will send out more details as plans are made.

I will be working on updating my data base of the GHS Alumni again in the next few weeks. I will be reaching out to each of you either by email, text, or phone to verify that I have your correct mailing addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. Your prompt replies will make my job a little easier.

Thank you,

Alan N McCollough
